New Zealand has revamped its Active Investor Plus (AIP) visa program, commonly referred to as the “golden visa”
As business advisors, Alliott NZ is closely following these changes because they directly affect high-net-worth individuals, global investors and business owners looking at New Zealand investment and migration opportunities.
The April 2025 changes created a surge of interest.
In just 10 weeks, nearly 200 people applied for golden visas compared to only 116 applications under the old system over 2½ years. For investors, business owners and family offices considering New Zealand as a base for future growth, these reforms are significant.
What Changed with the Active Investor Plus Visa?
Two new categories:
- Growth Category – requires NZD$5 million invested over 3 years in higher-risk opportunities such as direct investments and managed funds.
- Balanced Category – requires NZD$10 million invested over 5 years with more flexibility, including property and bonds.
Barriers reduced:
- No more English language requirement.
- Residency stay reduced to just 21 days over three years.
Wider investment choices: broader options across funds, businesses, and property.
Investor Uptake and Early Approvals
By June 2025:
- 189 applications had been submitted (vs. 116 under the old program across 2½ years)
- 100 applications were approved in principle
- 7 investors had transferred their funds, committing around NZD$45 million to New Zealand
- Potentially NZD$845 million could flow into the economy if all applications are completed.
Investor Origin and Global Demand
Close to half of applicants came from the United States, with others from China and Hong Kong. Families and business owners are using the program to secure residency and invest strategically in New Zealand’s growth sectors. The demand reflects New Zealand’s reputation as a stable, business-friendly country that offers both lifestyle and long-term business opportunities.
Why This Matters for Business Owners
For business owners in New Zealand, the inflow of investor capital could mean:
- Greater access to funding for growth projects
- New opportunities for partnerships, business sales and succession planning
- A stronger focus on value building and business valuation, as global investors seek scalable businesses with strong financial performance.
