A world-first trade agreement between New Zealand and Singapore designed to protect the flow of essential goods during periods of supply chain disruption is now in force.
The Agreement on Trade in Essential Supplies (AOTES) provides reciprocal supply commitments between the two countries.
Singapore has agreed to supply New Zealand with fuel, medicines and chemicals, while New Zealand will supply Singapore with food.
For New Zealand businesses, the agreement is particularly relevant in an environment where geopolitical tensions and international disruption can quickly affect access to critical supplies. The Government says AOTES is intended to strengthen supply chain resilience, provide greater certainty and support the open, rules-based trading system on which New Zealand businesses rely.
The agreement was signed on 4 May 2026 and came into force on 18 July 2026.
For businesses trading internationally, AOTES is another reminder of the value of understanding how New Zealand’s expanding trade relationships may affect supply chains, export opportunities and business planning.
